Episode 12: Ghosts of the Lost Colony & The Graveyard of The Atlantic Hauntings in NC

Megan and Brooks discuss the Lost Colony of Roanoke and paranormal experiences in and around Roanoke Island. Could they be connected? We also discuss the Graveyard of the Atlantic off the coast of NC and paranormal experiences in the OBX (outer banks) of NC.

The Lost Colony of North Carolina’s Ghosts and Ghost Stories

If you don’t know the history of the Lost Colony, here it is in a nutshell. In 1587, the first colony in America was in Roanoke in what is now Roanoke Island, North Carolina. 117 English men, women, and children came ashore to establish a permanent English settlement. Three years later when English ships returned in 1590 to bring supplies, the island was deserted with no sign of the colonists except the word “Croatoan” etched into a tree. The mystery of what happened to the colonists still hasn’t been solved to this day.

Now, people live on the island and there are lots of paranormal reports and encounters that have been documented. In one encounter we discuss, two teens heard a loud cat-like screeching and then saw a dark blob come down from the hills and over a pier until it just disappeared. This black blob has been seen by others in the area dating back hundreds of years. Could this blob have been responsible for the disappearance of the colonists? Is there something sinister on the island that tries to get people to leave?

The Graveyard of the Atlantic Hauntings

We also discuss another important part of North Carolina history, the graveyard of the Atlantic. If you look at the shoreline of NC, you can see it’s not a straight line and actually has lots of inlets and small islands of thin land around it.

Due to this jagged shoreline, many ships have gone down off the coast of North Carolina earning the name The Graveyard of the Atlantic. It’s estimated that just off NC’s coast there are at least 5,000 sunken ships in the area.

We discuss eerie experiences others have had close to the outer banks of North Carolina including seeing these ghost ships. Someone even had an experience with Blackbeard the pirate who was also killed off the coast of North Carolina on the inner side of Ocracoke Island.

Episode 11: Black-Eyed Children Experiences & Theories

In this episode of #creaky, Brooks and Megan discuss the legend of black-eyed children and those who’ve had experiences with them in the USA. We dive into theories on what exactly these creatures could be.

What Are Black-Eyed Children?

The name suggests these are children that have been abused but it’s quite the contrary. They say the eyes are the window to the soul but these children have blacked-out eyes, either hiding their soul or proving they are devoid of a soul. They are unlike any normal child.

These creatures are very articulate and convincing, trying to get you to invite them into your home or vehicle. We aren’t sure what their motive is but it can’t be good.

Black-Eyed Children Experiences

We discuss several experiences people across the United States have had with black-eyed children, even an experience with black-eyed elderly people.

One experience details two children trying to convince a man to take them to their home. He had a long conversation with the older boy who seemed very smart and mature for his age. He didn’t realize until later in the conversation that they had blacked-out eyes. After he saw this he became spooked and left.

Another experience was an elderly couple who actually let the children into their home. Not long afterwards bad things began to happen to them. Learn the full story by listening to the podcast on your favorite podcast platform.

Episode 10: Legend of Moon-Eyed People of North Carolina

Megan and Brooks discuss the moon-eyed people of NC which is a Cherokee legend mentioned several times throughout history. Are the moon-eyed people aliens? Welsh descendants? An ancient civilization of the human species?

History of the Moon-Eyed People of NC

Published accounts of the moon-eyed people date back to the late 1700s but according to Cherokee legend, they have been around hundreds of years before this. They are called “moon-eyed” because they only came out at night and had pale white skin. So, it was thought, they were very sensitive to sunlight, both their eyes and skin.

They were also described as very small and they lived in caves in the mountains of NC. They were considered natives because they were here long before Europeans came over.

They are called “Welsh Indians” in documents that declared the removal of Cherokees from NC in what we know as “the trail of tears”. They were called Welsh because it was theorized that they were the descendants of a Welsh prince named Madoc who appeared in the area more than 300 years before Columbus sailed to America. But, Madoc was officially said to have been lost at sea and there is no evidence that the moon-eyed people and Madoc were related.

Colonel Leonard Marbury who was an intermediary between the government and Cherokee people wrote that the Cherokee told him when they first arrived in the country which they now inhabit, they found it possessed by “moon-eyed-people” who could not see in the daytime. He believed they were an albino race.

Moon-Eyed People of NC Theories

Welsh Decendants

As stated above, some believe they are the descendants of a Welsh prince named Madoc who sailed the Atlantic but never returned. This is considered folklore because there are no historical accounts to prove it.

It’s said he sailed to America in 1170 and according to the story he took to the sea to escape internecine violence at home. Legend also says that Madoc’s voyagers intermarried with local Native Americans and that their Welsh-speaking descendants still live somewhere in the United States today.

Others speculate that these descendants were the moon-eyed people of NC but it doesn’t explain why they were so short, pale, and sensitive to the sun.

Alien Race

It’s speculated that the moon-eyed people were actually an alien race that was left on Earth to investigate it. It also ties into the Brown Mountain lights of NC that still happen today. Some say the Brown Mountain lights are aliens looking for the lost moon-eyed people from long before.

The moon-eyed people are thought to have built a wall to try and keep the Cherokee off of their land which is still standing today at Fort Mountain.

No one knows what happened to the moon-eyed people of NC and if they are still out there. There haven’t been recent sightings of them and the last known mention of them historically was in 1923 in the Chattanooga News.

Episode 9: Skinwalker Sightings in the US

Megan and Brooks discuss skinwalkers and others’ experiences with these skinwalkers from all around the country including the infamous skinwalker ranch in Utah.

What is a skinwalker?

A skinwalker is a witch who can turn themselves into an animal-like creature, like a wolf or coyote, to trick its prey and harm them in some way, according to Navajo culture.

Megan and Brooks discuss skinwalkers, where the legend comes from, and what others believe in terms of them. They also discuss whether or not a skinwalker has a weakness, which according to an experience they discuss, does. The weakness is usually just naming the skinwalker if you know the human’s name. Listen to the podcast for that specific story.

Skinwalker Experiences in NC and the United States

We discuss several experiences others had with skinwalkers in and around the United States starting with North Carolina. There is a skinwalker legend in Uwharrie North Carolina that says a skinwalker prowls around the area, looking for prey. Someone said he and his dog chased what looked to be a bear into the river and then it stood up, turned into a man, and jumped in the water.

We discuss another instance where a young boy was riding with his uncle and skinwalkers jump onto the vehicle and in the back of the truck, trying to get the riders to look at it. The boy was Native American and his uncle said a Navajo prayer to get rid of them.

Another instance details children home alone while their parents were away for a few hours. One teen sees someone going through things in a vehicle outside so he goes to see and it’s a weird-looking animal. He tries to shoot it but the gun stops working (which is a common theme with skinwalkers). The parents arrive home and the father and sons chase it out of the land. As the skinwalker jumps into the darkness the father says the name of the witch and supposably, that person died the next day.

Episode 8: Family Annihilator Victim Ghosts – Lawson & Watts Family Murders

In this creaky episode, Megan & Brooks discuss the possibilities of familicide, or family annihilator, victims ghosts still wandering the earth and maybe giving clues as to why their family member took their own life.

Lawson Family Murders in North Carolina Details

We take a deep dive into North Carolina’s Lawson Family Murders that took place in 1929 on Christmas Day. Charlie Lawson murdered his entire family, except his eldest son, and then kills himself when people start to look for him. He murdered his wife and 6 of his 7 children that day. One question on everyone’s mind is why? Could there have been a paranormal influence over him? Was he hearing voices telling him to do this as we see with women who are in postpartum depression? And, do the victims of this senseless tragedy still roam the earth?

We discuss some theories on why he did it including a very sad one that Charlie Lawson impregnated his own daughter and wanted to save the family from the humiliation he caused. Another is that he had suffered a brain injury which caused him to go insane.

We then discuss experiences others have had around the area dating back to 1929 until the present day. Are the victims’ ghosts still there? Are they trying to tell us something?

Watts Family Murder Ghosts

A famous familicide happened in 2018 and took place in Colorado. Chris Watts murdered his pregnant wife and two children and then went on national television begging for their safe return. We don’t think a paranormal influence was over Chris, more of the influence of a despicable mistress.

But, are the ghosts of Shanann Watts and her two little girls, Bella and Celeste still here? Shanann’s mother tells of an experience she had after her family had been killed where the ghosts of Shanann, Bella and Celeste visited her to tell her they were okay.

We also discuss others who have tried to perform a seance to get information from the victims on why this happened to them if they even know.

Sometimes we look for answers in places we will never find them.

Episode 7: Berry Hill Bridge NC Hauntings

Megan and Brooks discuss the Berry Hill Bridge in Ruffin, NC, right on the VA line. The bridge and associated Berry Hill mansion have a rich history dating back to the Revolutionary War times. From soldier ghosts to devil-worshipping cult sacrifices, there are a lot of things happening in the Berry Hill Bridge area.

Berry Hill Bridge & Mansion Hauntings in North Carolina

Berry Hill bridge in Ruffin, North Carolina has been around since the mid-1700s, before the Revolutionary War. The Berry Hill Mansion has a history starting with the Revolutionary War as it served as a hospital to General Nathanael Greene’s army in the spring of 1781.

The bridge was once a covered one that led covered wagons from one side of the Dan River to the other is now covered in graffiti as you can see in the picture above.

One legend states that devil worshippers visit the Berry Hill Bridge to perform their rituals and make sacrifices off the bridge. Another legend says that a lady near the bridge was hit by a train and lost her head. So now she travels the train tracks looking for her lost head.

There have been several suicides at the bridge, people jumping over into the river below and drowning. Others say that you can see Revolutionary war ghosts around the bridge as well as Civil War ghosts as if they are still in battle. Megan even had an experience that you need to listen to the podcast to hear.

The Mansion is said to be haunted by ghosts of years past as well as slaves that worked the plantation around the house as there is a slave graveyard still on the property.

Devil’s Tramping Grounds in NC

We also discuss the Devil’s Tramping Grounds in Bear Creek, NC which is a circular area of land where nothing grows and no animals will cross. These discussions lead to our experiences with hauntings in homes we grew up in while living in the area of northern NC on the Virginia stateline. Lots of paranormal happenings around here!
